EDWARDSVILLE — The Madison County Coroner’s Office is investigating the death of a St. Louis man after a minor traffic crash Monday.
In a press release Tuesday, Madison County Coroner Stephen P. Nonn said his office is investigating the death of Andrew Gordon Gobczynski, 33, of Olive Street, who was found unresponsive inside his car after being involved in a minor single-vehicle crash at about 11:50 a.m. Dec. 8 in the northbound lanes of Interstate 55 at mile marker 5.7, near Illinois 111.
Gateway Regional Medical Center in Granite City reported Gobczynski was brought into the emergency room in full cardiac arrest after his 2006 Infinity G35 ran into a cable barrier. An emergency room physician pronounced him dead at 12:50 p.m. He was wearing a seat belt and air bags did not deploy; the car sustained minimal damage.
There were no signs at the scene that alcohol was involved. A witness to the crash stopped and rendered first aid.
An autopsy Tuesday morning was inconclusive pending additional laboratory and toxicology studies. There was no obvious accident-related trauma observed on Gobczynski’s body.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by Hall Funeral Chapel in Effingham, Ill.
Illinois State Police continue to investigate the crash.
