In an ongoing effort to support the community, GCS employees participate in Jeans Days each month. In exchange for a donation of $15 or more, employees can wear jeans Fridays and Saturdays during April.
Call for Help Inc. hosted the first of a planned annual Walk a Mile in Her Shoes, an international fundraiser to stop sexual assault and gender violence, on April 16 at Schranz Park in Swansea. With more than 120 walkers, approximately $5,500 was raised for Call for Help Inc.
There is an old saying: “You can’t really understand another person’s experience until you’ve walked a mile in their shoes.” Walk a Mile in Her Shoes asks men to literally walk one mile in women’s high-heeled shoes. It’s not easy walking in these shoes, but it’s fun and it gets the community to talk about a difficult topic: gender relations and sexual violence.
“We would like to thank everyone who supported the Sexual Assault Victims Care Unit this past weekend at our first annual Walk A Mile in Her Shoes event, especially those that donned a pair of red heels who took a public stance speaking out against sexual assault and abuse in our community,” Melissa Tutterow of Call for Help said.
Call for Help has 24-hour assistance to victims of rape, molestation, harassment or other sexual assault. Trained advocates are available to help victims at the hospital or police station. They continue assistance through the medical and legal systems and provide victims and their families no-cost counseling for as long as they need it. The Sexual Assault Victims Care Unit is available at (618) 397-0975.
