EAST ALTON — An East Alton man was charged Wednesday with three felonies in a shooting Tuesday that injured a woman.
Police Chief Darren Carlton said Steven Rice, 19, of the 200 block of Illinois Street, was charged with aggravated battery with a firearm, residential burglary and aggravated discharge of a firearm, all felonies. Carlton said Rice fired a .22-caliber rifle through a door at a residence in the 100 block of East Alton Avenue. One bullet went through the door and struck a woman, who was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Police are investigating why Rice went to the house, Carlton said.
“They were trying to keep him out of the house and he fired into the door,” Carlton said.
Carlton said he did not know if the woman had been released from the hospital.
Rice was still in custody at the East Alton jail Wednesday, pending a transfer to the county jail in Edwardsville.
Rice has had previous run-ins with law enforcement in East Alton and Wood River, Carlton said.
“We’ve had several dealings with him,” he said.
