ALTON – A suspect was charged Friday in a fatal shooting on his 24th birthday.
Justin D. Vaughn, of Alton, whose birthday is Feb. 5, allegedly shot and killed Demetrius C. Lucas, 30, with a .45-caliber handgun and faces three counts of first-degree murder and one count of aggravated unlawful use of weapons.
Alton Police responded to a shots-fired call in the Storey Manor Apartment Complex at 10 p.m. Wednesday.
Officers determined Demetrius Cortez Lucas suffered a mid-body gunshot wound. Lucas received civilian transport to Alton Memorial Hospital prior to officers arriving.
Lucas was treated at Alton Memorial Hospital before being flown to a St. Louis area hospital. He was pronounced dead at 11:03 p.m.
Alton Police Public Information Officer Emily Hejna said patrol officers and detectives had someone in custody and awaiting formal charges within 24 hours.
“Oftentimes it takes a lot longer than that,” she said.
The investigation continued in the apartment complex as the Alton Police Patrol Division located an exterior crime scene and began talking with residents and identifying potential witnesses. Police took Vaughn into custody at about 2:30 a.m. Thursday.
The investigation continued into the daylight hours with additional searches including the execution of a search warrant. Detectives conducted interviews today with the suspect and witnesses. At approximately 1:30 p.m., the case was presented to the Madison County State’s Attorney’s Office for charges.
A judge set a no-bond bail for Vaughn, who is in custody at the Alton Police Department.
