A Brighton woman was charged Monday in Madison County Circuit Court with a felony charge of retail theft under $300 (second subsequent offense), according to a press release from Madison County Sheriff Robert Hertz.
Police identified the woman as Amananda L. Carrigan, 22, of the 2000 block of Chestnut Street.
On Saturday at 7:37 p.m., sheriff’s deputies responded to Walmart, 6660 Godfrey Road, in reference to a retail theft. Deputies met with Walmart employees who witnessed Cardigan conceal a swimming suit inside of her clothing. Carrigan tried to leave the store but a loss prevention officer stopped her. Carrigan was found to be in possession of the swimming suit, two necklaces and other items believed to have been stolen from Walmart.
Carrigan was arrested and transported to the Madison County Jail, where she was held pending a formal review of facts by the Madison County State’s Attorney’s Office. Carrigan was eligible for the enhanced second subsequent felony offense because of a 2013 conviction for retail theft out of Madison County.
Judge Kyle Napp issued the warrant and criminal information on Carrigan. Bond was set at $15,000.
