WOOD RIVER — An East Alton teenager was charged Thursday with armed robbery after displaying a knife and taking cash from a CVS Pharmacy clerk, police said.
In a press release, Deputy Chief Dan Bunt identified the suspect as David L. Hoffmann, 18. The Wood River Police Department received a call at approximately 8:50 p.m. Wednesday reporting an armed robbery at CVS Pharmacy, 1 W. Edwardsville Road.
Police were advised a young white man, thin, approximately 5 feet 6 inches, wearing a black-hooded sweatshirt, gray pants and stocking hat, showed the clerk a knife and demanded money. The man fled the store on foot after receiving an undetermined amount of cash.
Wood River, East Alton, Roxana and Hartford police set up a perimeter. At approximately 9 p.m., a witness who saw the suspect running told officers he heard what sounded like tree branches breaking near Wood River Avenue and Second Street, East Alton. An East Alton officer located the suspect, who apparently climbed up in a tree, in the same area where the witness heard the noises.
Hoffmann was taken into custody without incident.
The case was presented to the Madison County States Attorney’s Office Thursday morning. His bond was set at $200,000.
