ALTON – A Godfrey man faces a felony charge of burglary after breaking into a car parked in front of a Quizno’s sandwich shop.
A witness sitting in the parking lot of the Alton Corners shopping center on Monday, Feb. 24, called police after seeing the suspect, 19, trying to break into a black Chevy Equinox.
The suspect was identified as Tyler Darnell, 19, of the 6200 block of Squire Drive.
Police responded to 319 Homer Adams Parkway at 11:16 a.m., and saw Darnell walking rapidly to the north toward a large box truck in the parking lot. An officer pursued the suspect to the northbound ditch area of the lot, where he told Darnell to get to the ground.
According to police records, Darnell told police he had “gotten into a car.”
Police noticed a pink and gray purse on the ground and a green case containing a digital camera 25 feet away.
Officials located the owner of the vehicle, Lisa A. Watsek, 34, of Alton, who had parked the car an hour before Darnell broke into it.
According to documents, Watsek told police a $10 and two $1 bills were missing from the vehicle's center console.
Records said police found the $10 and one $1 on the suspect, and held it for evidence.
Darnell was also found to have a probationary violation warrant for his arrest on a burglary charge from the Madison County Sheriff’s Office.
Bond was set at $50,000.
