A Godfrey woman was charged Friday in Madison County Circuit Court with a felony charge of retail theft under $300 (second subsequent offense), according to a press release from Madison County Sheriff Robert J. Hertz.
Sheriff’s deputies responded at 2:03 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 2, to Walmart, 6660 Godfrey Road, Godfrey, in reference to a retail theft in progress. A Walmart loss prevention officer stopped Haley L. Duckett, 35, of the 2700 block of Shordell Drive, and a second juvenile female who the officer witnessed leaving the store with unpaid-for merchandise. The officer stopped the two as they were exiting the business and confronted them with the thefts. Both defendants returned the items and retreated to a vehicle on the parking lot.
Deputies stopped the suspect’s vehicle as she was driving away from the business. Duckett was taken into custody for attempting to steal $40.77 in clothing. Duckett was transported to the Madison County Jail, where she was held pending a formal review of facts by the Madison County State’s Attorney’s Office. The juvenile was released and the case will be forwarded to the Madison County State’s Attorney’s Juvenile Division for a review on possible charges.
The warrant and criminal information was issued by Judge Kyle Napp, who set Duckett’s bond at $20,000. Duckett qualified for the enhanced felony offense because she was convicted in January 2013 of theft in Madison County.
