A rural Granite City man was charged Thursday in Madison County Circuit Court with a felony charge of burglary, according to a press release from Madison County Sheriff Robert J. Hertz.
Sheriff’s deputies responded at 4:43 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 15, to a home in the 3200 block of Fairmont Avenue in rural Collinsville in reference to reported burglary in progress. A neighbor called the sheriff’s office when she saw a subject entering a home after he kicked in the front door. Deputies, assisted by the Illinois State Police and Collinsville Police Department, searched the area and located the suspect, who was walking in the 3200 block of VFW Lane. The suspect was identified as Billy Joe McCallister, 39, of the 600 block of Margaret Avenue, Granite City.
McCallister was taken into custody and transported to the Madison County Jail, where he was held pending a formal review of facts by the Madison County State’s Attorney’s Office. The home was unoccupied when McCallister made entry.
The warrant and criminal information was issued by Judge Richard Tognarelli, who set McCallister’s bond at $80,000.
