EDWARDSVILLE — A man authorities say kidnapped his intellectually disabled 13-year-old stepdaughter and her infant son has returned to Madison County for prosecution.
In an email Wednesday, Capt. T. Mike Dixon of the Madison County Sheriff’s Office said Christopher M. Derleth is in the custody of the Madison County Jail on charges of aggravated kidnapping, a Class X felony, and child abduction, a Class 4 felony.
Derleth, 39, his stepdaughter and her child were located in a remote area of West Virginia on Sept. 24 after police say Derleth took the children from their Edwardsville area guardian’s home on Sept. 18. Derleth waived his right to extradition proceedings on Oct. 5 while detained in West Virginia.
Police launched a nationwide manhunt to find Derleth and the children.
“On behalf of Sheriff John Lakin and the Madison County Sheriff’s Office, I’d like to say thanks to everyone who played a part in this investigation,” Dixon wrote in the email.
Derleth’s bond is set at $200,000.
