BELLEVILLE — St. Clair County Circuit Judge Zina Cruse on Wednesday sentenced Gregory K. Nelson, 52, of East Saint Louis, to 50 years in prison for attempted murder of a police officer and aggravated discharge of a firearm.
The charges stem from a shooting on the Illinois 255 northbound entrance ramp from State Street in East Saint Louis.
On June 23, 2015, at approximately 11:30 p.m., a trooper conducted a traffic stop on the northbound entrance ramp to Illinois 255 from State Street in East St. Louis. The trooper, a 9-year veteran, suspected the driver, Nelson, was intoxicated and asked Nelson to exit the vehicle for field sobriety testing. At some point, while Nelson was outside of the vehicle, he pulled out a gun and fired at the trooper. The trooper returned fire and Nelson fled the scene on foot. Neither the Trooper nor Nelson were injured during the incident. Nelson was taken into custody several days after the initial incident by the U.S. Marshal’s Service and the Illinois State Police at an apartment in St. Ann, Mo. The fugitive felony warrant was served without incident, and Nelson had been awaiting trial since.
Nelson will have to serve at least 85 percent of his sentence.
All subjects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
