An Edwardsville man was charged Tuesday in Madison County Circuit Court with a felony charge of driving while license revoked, Madison County Sheriff Robert J. Hertz said in a press release.
Police identified the suspect as Richard Benjamin Dunnavant Jr., 43, of the 1300 block of Carribean Drive.
At about 10:30 a.m. Monday, June 23, a sheriff’s deputy on routine patrol in the area of Illinois Route 140 and St. James Drive in rural Edwardsville observed Dunnavant operating a vehicle eastbound on Illinois 140. The deputy recognized Dunnavant from a prior police encounter and knew he possessed a revoked Illinois driver’s license.
The deputy initiated a traffic stop with the vehicle Dunnavant was operating and based on his revoked driver’s status Dunnavant was arrested.
Dunnavant’s driver’s license was revoked because of a 2007 out-of-state conviction for driving under the influence. Dunnavant subsequently was convicted on Nov. 17, 2009, for driving while license revoked, which qualified him for the enhanced felony offense.
Dunnavant was transported to the Madison County Jail, where he was held pending a formal review of facts by the Madison County State’s Attorney’s Office.
The felony warrant and information was signed by Judge James Hackett, who set bond at $15,000.
