A Godfrey woman was charged Friday in Madison County Circuit Court with a felony charge of theft over $500, according to a press release from Madison County Sheriff Robert J. Hertz.
The woman is identified as Clara A. Stewart, 41, of the 300 block of Big Arch Road.
On April 18, the Madison County Sheriff’s Office received a theft complaint from a resident of Methodist Village, 5201 Asbury Court, Godfrey. The deputy met with the 89-year-old victim who reported the theft of approximately $6,000 from her apartment. The victim reported an unknown person had been stealing money from her apartment for several months. No specific suspects were known at the time of the initial report.
The sheriff’s department investigated the complaint and identified Clara A. Stewart as a possible suspect. Stewart is a certified nursing assistant who works for an independent company contracted by the victim, and her family, to provide basic in home health care. Investigators met with Stewart as she left the victim’s home during the evening hours of Thursday, May 15. Investigators developed evidence linking Stewart to the theft.
Stewart was transported to the Madison County Jail, where she was held pending a formal review of facts by the Madison County State’s Attorney’s Office. The warrant and criminal information was issued by Judge Neil Schroeder, who set Stewart’s bond at $40,000.
