A Troy man was charged Monday in Madison County Circuit Court with a felony charge of aggravated battery for spitting in a deputy’s face, according to a press release from Madison County Sheriff Robert J. Hertz.
Police identified the man as Curt B. Haeffner, 26, of the 700 block of Cheshire Drive.
The Madison County Sheriff’s Office responded to a domestic disturbance Sunday, Aug. 10, at 5:33 a.m. in the 5400 block of Maryville Road in rural Granite City. Deputies were met in the driveway by Haeffner’s mother, who told them Haeffner was inside the home fighting with her husband. Deputies entered the home to find Haeffner being restrained by his stepfather.
Haeffner’s mother told deputies she was called by the Pontoon Beach Police Department at about 5 a.m. and told that Haeffner was asleep on a stranger’s porch. Haeffner’s mother and stepfather responded to the stranger’s home in Pontoon Beach and took custody of Haeffner. According to the mother, Haeffner appeared to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and appeared to have been involved in a fight. Haeffner’s mother told deputies that her son began arguing with her on the ride home. Once home Haeffner’s mother said Haeffner struck her in the face and attempted to hit her husband.
Haeffner was arrested for domestic battery for striking his mother. Haeffner physically resisted deputies as they attempted to place him in a squad car and spit in a responding deputy’s face.
Haeffner was transported to the Madison County Jail, where he was held pending a formal review of facts by the Madison County State’s Attorney’s Office. The felony warrant and information was issued by Judge James Hackett, who set Haeffner’s bond at $50,000.
Haeffner also was charged with misdemeanor charges of domestic battery and resisting a peace officer.
