WOOD RIVER — A Wood River man was charged Tuesday with aggravated arson for allegedly setting a fire at an apartment complex, police said.
In a press release, Deputy Chief Dan Bunt said the Madison County State's Attorney’s Office charged Justin G. Rodewald, 26, of the 200 block of South 14th Street, with one count of aggravated arson, a Class X felony.
The Wood River Police Department received a 911 call at 11:35 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 18, of smoke coming from a lower apartment in the 100 block of Thompson Street. The Wood River police and fire departments evacuated the apartment complex and extinguished the fire. The apartment was vacant and the fire appeared to have been set.
During the investigation, a woman in an upstairs apartment told officers she had an argument with an ex-boyfriend earlier and she received text messages from him implicating him in the fire.
The evidence in this case was presented to the Madison County State's Attorney’s Office on Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2014. Associate Judge Neil Schroeder set Rodewald’s bond at $250,000.
Rodewald is not in custody. Anyone with information about his whereabouts is encouraged to call the Wood River Police Department at (618) 251-3114.
