WOOD RIVER — Police are asking for the public’s help finding a Wood River man they say broke into his ex-girlfriend’s apartment while she was sleeping.
Wardell M. Henderson, 26, of the 500 block of State Street, was charged Monday by the Madison County States Attorney’s Office with two counts of aggravated criminal sexual assault, a Class X felony; one count of aggravated stalking, a Class 3 felony; and one count of home invasion, a Class X felony.
According to a press release from Deputy Chief Dan Bunt, at approximately 8:45 a.m. Sunday, the Wood River Police Department received 911 calls from an apartment building on South Second Street. The building’s occupants reported a woman screaming for help inside one of the apartment units.
When officers arrived, they located the female victim in a neighboring apartment. She reported her estranged boyfriend, Henderson, who she has an order of protection against, broke into her apartment while she slept. The suspect fled the apartment through a window when a neighbor heard the victim scream. Police could not find Henderson after searching the area.
Judge Kyle Knapp set Henderson’s bond at $300,000.
Henderson is not in custody. Police say he has ties in the Alton and Wood River area as well as Collinsville and Centreville. Anyone who knows Henderson’s whereabouts is asked to call the Wood River Police Department at (618) 251-3114.
