ALTON — The Alton Police Department conducted a series of online prostitution stings, resulting in several arrests.
The operation was conducted by officers who posed as escorts on a website. The suspects contacted the officers via telephone and offered to pay for a variety of sexual acts. When the suspects arrived at the prearranged location, the suspects were arrested for solicitation of a sex act, a Class A Misdemeanor. A variety of evidence was seized from the suspects.
The following individuals were arrested during the detail:
- Michael D. Duncan, 65, of Bethalto
- Steven D. Howerton, 54, of Glen Carbon
- Dean E. Crosby, 29, of Alton
- Achutendra S. Kasireddy, 23, of Edwardsville
- Munir S. Gomaa, 24, of St. Louis
- Nicholas D. Baker, 23, of Alton
- Brian P. Rose, 40, of Collinsville
While there are a few remaining prostitutes who use the streets to flag down their customers, many have turned to technology to facilitate their crimes. The online prostitution sting was conducted as a result of technology being used by both the escorts and consumers to conduct their illegal acts. Chief Jason “Jake” Simmons said his officers are actively pursuing those who still use the city streets for their illegal business as well as those who have turned to technology.
These charges, as well as the statements made herein, are based upon probable cause. The defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
