Jury selection is set for Tuesday, June 17, in the trial of man accused of sexually assaulting a 13-year-old female relative.
In an amended May 8 indictment, Johnny Carpenter, 50, of Granite City is charged with two counts of predatory criminal sexual assault of a child, one count of criminal sexual assault and two counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse.
Bail was set at $500,000.
The Madison County State’s Attorney’s Office originally filed the indictment Nov. 4, 2011.
Assistant State’s Attorneys Amy Gabriel and Ali Hebrank are prosecuting; Dave Fahrenkamp is representing the defendant and Circuit Judge Kyle Napp is presiding.
According to published reports, Carpenter tried to stab himself to death after he was discovered having sex with the girl in November 2011.
