COLLINSVILLE - The Illinois State Police announce the arrest of Gregory K. Nelson, 52, of East St. Louis.
Nelson was taken into custody at approximately 5:45 p.m. Saturday by the U.S. Marshals Service and the Illinois State Police at an apartment in St. Ann, Mo. The fugitive felony warrant was served without incident.
Nelson is being charged with attempted first degree murder, aggravated discharge of a firearm and unlawful use of weapons by a felon. The charges stem from a shooting that occurred on the Illinois 255 northbound entrance ramp from State Street in East St. Louis.
A trooper conducted a traffic stop at approximately 11:30 p.m. June 23. The trooper, a nine-year veteran, suspected that the driver, Nelson, was intoxicated and asked Nelson to exit the vehicle for field sobriety testing. At some point, while Nelson was outside of the vehicle, he pulled out a gun and fired at the trooper. The trooper returned fire and Nelson ran away. Neither the trooper nor Nelson were injured.
Nelson is detained by authorities in Missouri pending extradition to Illinois.
