A Wood River man was charged Wednesday in Madison County Circuit Court with a felony charge of burglary, according to a press release from Madison County Sheriff Robert J. Hertz.
Police identified the man as Gregory Chase Beckstrom, 19, of the 1500 block of Esther.
At 5:38 a.m. Tuesday, July 22, sheriff’s deputies responded to the 1000 block of Rhondell Place, East Alton, to a vehicle burglary. A witness confronted the suspect, who fled on foot from the scene. A responding sheriff’s deputy located the male subject, who was later verified as Gregory Beckstrom, walking in the area. Beckstrom fled from the deputy on foot and into a heavily wooded area near Interstate 255. K-9 units from the Madison County Sheriff’s Office and the Granite City Police Department entered the wooded area in search of Beckstrom. Beckstrom was apprehended a short time later by the sheriff’s K-9 unit and was arrested.
Beckstrom was identified by the witness as the person who was observed committing the burglary. Police recovered additional physical evidence linking Beckstrom to the burglary.
Beckstrom was transported to the Madison County Jail, where he was held pending a formal review of facts by the Madison County State’s Attorney’s Office.
The warrant and criminal information was issued by Judge Richard Tognarelli, who set Beckstrom’s bond at $80,000. Beckstrom also was charged with the misdemeanor charges of unlawful consumption of alcohol by a minor, unlawful possession of alcohol by a minor, and resisting a peace officer.
