The Miles Davis Memorial Project broke ground April 1 in downtown Alton for a new music plaza where the statue of Miles Davis will be placed sometime this year.
Project organizers hailed the ceremony as an exciting day for positive change in the city’s historic district.
“We are waiting to announce an unveiling date until all necessary funds are in place; we need an additional $20,000 and have confidence in the community to help us reach that goal soon,” Pat Ackman said. “The groundbreaking is the first step in preparation for the sculpture.”
Committee member and project manager Bill Moyer will work closely with architect Barry Moyer, the city of Alton, RCS Construction and Walker Masonry and Contracting to prepare the site. With demolition complete, the next steps will be pouring the footings and laying the sand base in preparation for the placement of the memorial bricks and blocks.
Committee members recently traveled to Peoria to view Preston Jackson’s progress on the sculpture. “Everyone was pleased and excited with the results and we are now ready for Preston to take the next step of preparing the mold,” Ackman said. “There will be no more full body pictures of the sculpture on Facebook; we want to keep a little mystery until the unveiling.”
The committee thanks everyone who purchased memorial bricks and blocks in support of the project. Those items are no longer available to purchase. However, fundraising continues and the public can still become a part of it through donations with incentives ranging from $25 to $5,000. A limited number of commemorative programs will be designed for the unveiling. Ads for the program are available for $50 (business card), $100 (quarter page), $150 (half page) and $200 (full page).
