Construction on a new pre-kindergarten center is under way at South Elementary School in South Roxana.
ROXANA — A new pre-kindergarten center and classroom renovations are among changes coming to the Roxana School District.
Outdated portable classrooms have been in use at both elementary buildings since 2006. Construction began in June for an addition to South Elementary School, renovations and an addition to Central Elementary School. The largest addition will be at South Elementary, where a new pre-kindergarten center is being built on the southeast side of the building. It will include four classrooms designed to meet students’ learning needs. There will be ample storage space, an office with an entrance for families, and a bus drop-off and pickup lane. Two additional regular classrooms will be built so South will be able to accommodate all pre-k through second-grade students in 2016.
One classroom and restrooms will be added at Central and existing primary classrooms will be renovated in preparation for Central to serve the needs of all third- through fifth-graders.
“The additions have been greatly needed,” a school district press release states. “The Roxana School District has outstanding teachers and staff and has been extremely fortunate to continue to improve facilities and provide optimal learning environments. Infrastructure updates to accommodate the one-to-one laptop initiative, air conditioning in all buildings, and improved security entrances at every building are a few of the recent improvements. A new outdoor concession stand with public restrooms is currently being planned for the high school athletic fields.”
