GODFREY – Community Christmas received a boost this week from memorials at the funeral of Sophia B. Ives, who died Feb. 2.
Freer Auto Body co-owner Margaret Freer, who leads her company's Community Christmas efforts, said it means a lot to her that people donated to that cause. The memorials raised about $1,300.
"Community Christmas has always been one of the biggest projects we support," she said. "It was the favorite of my late son, David. We are probably Community Christmas' biggest supporter. We have already purchased 12 coats and nine carts of toys for Community Christmas in 2014."
Margaret's sister came up with the idea after thinking how much she missed David, who died at an early age.
"My mom knew we did honor him every year with Community Christmas," she said. "It was also very near and dear to her."
Community Christmas is sponsored and coordinated every year by the United Way-Southwest Illinois Division.
