ALTON — Two young men want to turn the spotlight back on Alton and show off the city’s musical talent. They’re hoping Sounds of Downtown will do that, this year and for years to come.
Doing business as DM Productions, friends and students Daniel Nosce, 21, and Mikeith Teague, 22, are behind the “people’s choice” contest.
A Facebook event page invited comments nominating local performers and bands. Voting from June 20-26 narrowed the field of about 35 artists to the top five. Final voting is Saturday, July 16, at Riverbender.com Community Center, 200 W. Third St.
The winner will be named the Sounds of Downtown 2K16 Artist of the Year and awarded either $200 or three free recording sessions. St. Louis comedian Romey Rome will be a master of ceremonies and the evening opens with a performance by rapper L. Mo.
“Alton is very talented, but it gets overlooked because we’re so close to St. Louis,” Nosce said. “We’re trying to put the spotlight back on Alton and want to promote the diversity of Alton’s music scene.”
He acknowledged the final contestants are all rappers but said it just worked out that way with the voting.
“We hope to build on and continue the Sounds of Downtown every year,” he said. “If we do, we’ll include and promote other genres, not just rappers.”
The 2K16 Artist of the Year would automatically be included in next year’s lineup.
The organizers have been friends since they were Alton High School students. Nosce is working on a public relations degree from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville; Teague is a radio DJ and the promotions director at WLCA, Lewis and Clark Community College’s radio station.
In the past, they tried to bring the contest to the college but couldn’t get it off the ground because of campus security issues.
“Ever since I’ve known Mikeith, he’s always had big plans,” Nosce said. “We both wanted to do this.”
Sounds of Downtown is 9 p.m. to midnight. Tickets are $5 in advance or $10 at the door. For ticket purchase or information, contact Teague at firstname.lastname@example.org or call Nosce at (618) 802-6440. Ticketholders must be 18 or older and have a valid form of identification.
