The East Alton Police Department is among three in Madison County offering a pharmaceutical disposal system donated by Illinois American Water.
Police departments offering the drop boxes include East Alton, 211 N. Shamrock; Glen Carbon Police Department, 149 N. Main St.; and Madison Police Department, 615 Madison Ave.
Residents are encouraged to drop off unwanted medicine so it can be incinerated, the Environmental Protection Agency’s recommended approach for pharmaceutical disposal. Flushing medications down the toilet or drain and throwing them in the trash is discouraged.
“This is a great opportunity for residents to securely drop off unwanted medications,” Madison County Sheriff John Lakin said. “It’s important to keep these items out of the hands of our youth and out of landfills and water supplies.”
Through partnership with local pharmacies, police departments and government officials, Illinois American Water has helped to implement 37 pharmaceutical disposal programs.
Additional programs are in Alton, Belleville, Caseyville, Collinsville, Maryville and O’Fallon.
