EDWARDSVILLE — An Edwardsville man died in a motorcycle crash Saturday, Sept. 20, in Saline Township, about 32 miles east of Alton.
According to a press release Monday from Madison County Coroner Stephen P. Nonn, John Kent Gelarden, 51, of the 6500 block of Millers Drive, was driving a 2003 Harley-Davidson FLH series motorcycle near the intersection of Illinois 160 and Frey Road when Gelarden ran into the back of a grain truck.
Gelarden was transported from the crash scene to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Highland, where he was pronounced dead at 12:21 p.m. by an emergency room doctor. Nonn said the preliminary cause of death was head and chest injuries.
Routine toxicology testing for the presence of alcohol or drugs will be performed.
Gelarden was a police dispatcher for the city of Madison. Elias, Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home in Bethalto is handling funeral arrangements.
Illinois State Police are investigating the crash.
