U.S. Rep. Bill Enyart (D-Illinois) led an 18-member House delegation from Illinois to rename the Kaskaskia Lock and Dam to the Jerry F. Costello Lock and Dam.
“Through efforts made by the Illinois congressional delegation and the Kaskaskia Lock and Dam, we are able to honor Congressman Costello for his most significant work in Illinois – transportation infrastructure,” Enyart said. “After 25 years of service to Southern Illinois, Jerry’s work can be seen across each county, through his tireless efforts to bring top-of-the-line infrastructure to the region.”
The authorization to rename the lock and dam came with the signing of the Water Resources Reform and Development Act (WRRDA) by President Obama last week. The original naming legislation, H.R. 3678, was included in WRRDA and sponsored by Enyart in December 2013.
“Congressman Costello has been a great friend and supporter of the Kaskaskia Regional Port District,” said Ed Weilbacher of the Kaskaskia Regional Port district. “His ability to show the nation the value of the lock and dam was critical to our operation.”
Costello began his congressional service in 1988 and retired in 2012. He was a member of the Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure. An official dedication ceremony is set for September.
