ALTON — A fire left a family without a home Thursday morning.
Alton Deputy Fire Chief Mark Harris said heavy smoke was pouring out of a residence in the 2300 block of Humbert Street when firefighters arrived shortly after 7:31 a.m. Neighbors said people possibly were still inside the 1 1/2-story house.
“The guys got in there and did a primary search, and as they did the fire conditions worsened and we had to pull them out, go on defensive attack and put out the fire,” Harris said.
The fire took 15-20 minutes to extinguish. Four firefighters from the East Alton Fire Department assisted. Firefighters were at the scene for two hours extinguishing hot spots, Harris said.
The house sustained heavy damage in the blaze. No injuries were reported.
The home’s residents are staying with family, he said.
The fire is not believed to be intentionally set.
