ALTON — Two fire departments responded to a second-story fire Friday in a vacant structure at 918 E. Sixth St.
The Alton Fire Department called for mutual aid from Godfrey to respond to the fire at approximately 11:30 a.m. Alton Fire Chief Bernie Sebold said a neighbor reported the structure is vacant.
When firefighters arrived, flames and smoke were coming from the second floor on the street side of the building. Crews began extinguishing the fire from the outside and then moved to the inside. A search of the building confirmed no one was inside, Sebold said.
The fire was extinguished in approximately 20 minutes, after which firefighters opened up walls and ceilings on the second floor to confirm there were no hot spots.
At approximately 12:30 p.m. Sebold said firefighters would likely be on the scene another hour. They had not yet begun to investigate the cause of the fire.
