ALTON — The inaugural Pietown Gospel Music Festival and second annual Ron Dunning Memorial Car Cruise will be held Friday, Aug. 28, and Saturday, Aug. 29.
Produced by Main Street UMC and the Honduras Mission Team and Men’s Ministry in association with the Drug Free Alton Coalition, the two-day event will be at Main Street UMC, 1400 Main St. Organizer Greg Gelzinnis said plans are coming together well and everyone is excited about the festival.
“As we all watch the local news and are aware of the events that have erupted across the country, as well as Ferguson, this event is going to give our entire community something to be a part of and have a role in planning,” Gelzinnis said. “Maybe, just maybe, (this will become) a model for working together that can be copied by others across the United States.”
Friday evening’s schedule includes performances by gospel musicians, food vendors, a children’s game area and outdoor inflatable toys. Saturday will be an all-day affair, continuing the festivities along with the addition of a car cruise from 4 until 9 p.m.
“We are very excited to be hosting the second annual Ron Dunning Memorial Car Show,” Main Street Men’s Ministry Chairman Terry Steward said. “Ron was an active member of our church and men’s ministry and we feel like this is a wonderful way to honor his life. While we are still saddened by Ron’s unexpected passing, we believe that he is proudly looking down with a smile on our car cruise.”
The purpose of the event is to provide a family-oriented music festival, unite the community and provide a venue that allows different churches and faiths to unite for a common purpose.
“Statistics continue to show and support that our faith community is a significant protective factor for the youth of our community,” Drug Free Alton Coalition Board Chairman Lura January said. “We believe the event also will provide the coalition with a platform to communicate with and engage the parents of our community and families in a fun, festive and healthy atmosphere.”
