The National Weather Service in St. Louis has issued an urban and small stream flood advisory for Madison County until 3 p.m.
Up to 3 inches of rain has fallen throughout the metro area with more on the way, according to the weather service's website, http://www.weather.gov/.
Glen Carbon, Granite City and Highland are among the communities likely to experience minor flooding.
An urban and small stream flood advisory means river or stream flows are elevated or ponding of water in urban or other areas is occurring or is imminent.
Excessive runoff will cause minor flooding of small creeks and streams, highways, streets and underpasses as well as other drainage areas and low-lying spots.
Most flood deaths occur in automobiles. Do not attempt to cross bridges, dips or other low spots if water covers the road. Never try to cross a flowing stream, even a small one, on foot or in a vehicle.
To report flooding, have the nearest law enforcement agency relay your report to the National Weather Service forecast office in St. Louis.
