ALTON — The East End Improvement Association awarded two local high school seniors $1,000 scholarships in memory of William Roller at its monthly meeting June 2.
The 2015 award recipients are Monica Wickenhauser of Alton High School and Claire Snider of Marquette Catholic High School. They were chosen from a field of 41 applicants to receive this year’s awards.
The scholarship was established in 1992 to honor the late William “Bill” Roller’s many years of community service. Roller was a longtime business owner and member of the improvement association.
Monica Wickenhauser will attend Truman State University in Kirksville, Mo., where she will major in accounting. While at AHS she amassed more than 174 hours of community service, as well as performing with the Encounter Youth Choral Group. She played soccer for four years and was elected team captain her senior year while earning a 4.65 grade point average. Wickenhauser is the daughter of Jack and Mary Wickenhauser.
Claire Snider will attend the University of Kansas in Lawrence, Kan., where she will major in pre-medicine with a focus on neonatology. While at MCHS she accumulated more than 214 hours of community service while playing for the tennis and soccer teams, being elected captain of both teams her senior year. She was also involved in Campus Ministry all four years while earning a 4.71 grade point average. Snider is the daughter of Scott and Kathryn Snider.
The East End Improvement Association is an Alton community service organization established in the 1870s. Although the group is better known as the sponsor and organizers of the Alton Memorial Day and Alton Halloween parades, the organization also volunteers its membership’s labor and allocates charitable funds to nonprofit organizations serving the Alton area.
