The final fight card was announced Wednesday for the 28th Annual Budweiser Guns 'N Hoses event Friday, Jan. 30, at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis. The event benefits BackStoppers, which helps families of first responders who die in the line of duty.
ST. LOUIS ― The final fight card has been set for the 28th Annual Budweiser Guns 'N Hoses event at 7 p.m. tonight at the Scottrade Center in downtown St. Louis.
The boxing event originally was scheduled for Nov. 26 but was postponed because of unrest in Ferguson, Mo., and surrounding areas following the grand jury ruling in the Michael Brown police shooting case. Tickets for the original date will be honored.
From more than 60 firefighters, police officers and emergency personnel, the final list of fighters was announced on Wednesday. Participants have been training for about six months in preparation for the largest fundraiser to support the BackStoppers organization. Participants had to fight a preliminary bout last week to make the final fight card.
The BackStoppers organization, founded in 1959, provides money for emergency expenses and arranges to pay bills, mortgages, debts, college costs and other expenses. Budweiser Guns ‘N Hoses has raised more than $4.5 million since 1987 to benefit families of first responders who have died in the line of duty.
“We are extremely excited to host Guns ‘N Hoses this Friday after postponing the event in November,” said David Stokes, president of the St. Louis Guns ‘N Hoses Boxing Association. “We feel our focus can now be on honoring the lives of those who have died in the line of duty and providing support for their families.”
Guns ‘N Hoses will feature 16 three-round matches between police officers, firefighters and emergency medical personnel from Missouri and Illinois. Both male and female fighters are scheduled. This year’s event will again feature Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fights, including the first female MMA fight. MMA was a popular addition to the event last year.
The BackStoppers serves the Illinois counties of Bond, Clinton, Madison, Monroe and St. Clair as well as members of Troop C of the Missouri Highway Patrol and District 11 of the Illinois State Police; St. Louis city, and the Missouri counties of St. Louis, St. Charles, Cape Girardeau, Franklin, Jefferson, Lincoln, Perry, Pike, St. Francois, Ste. Genevieve, Warren and Washington.
Tickets are $15 to $25 and can be purchased by calling Mark O’Brien, St. Louis City Police Department, (314) 691-1377; Ed Fingers, St. Louis County Police Department, (314) 713-6031; or Dan Wunder, O’Fallon, Ill., Police Department, (618) 973-1200. Tickets are also available at all Hair Saloon locations, the Scottrade Center box office and online at www.ticketmaster.com.
