ALTON — BJC Help for Your Health and Morrison Food Service have teamed up to make better food choices easy and fast in the Alton Memorial Hospital cafeteria.
Healthier choices will be clearly marked with the colorful “Help for Your Health” icon on the menu labels.
To qualify for the icon, these items will meet calorie, total fat, saturated fat, trans fat and sodium recommendations. Snacks and beverages also will meet sugar recommendations. In addition, qualifying items still will be marked as low-sodium or vegetarian with separate stickers.
The Help for Your Health-labeled items meet criteria based on the latest research and recommendations from the American Heart Association, Harvard School of Public Health and Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2010, said Aaron Reinberg, Morrison wellness manager for BJC HealthCare.
“We want to make sure eating healthy is easy,” Reinberg said. “Help for Your Health items in the cafés include whole fruits, fresh vegetables prepared with minimal fats and fresh herbs, salads, whole grain options, most sandwiches made with lean proteins such as turkey and chicken and minimal added cheeses and dressings, as well as yogurts, hummus and cut fruit options offered in our Outtakes sections.”
