ALTON — Main Street United Methodist Church’s 2015 Honduras Mission Team announces Just For Chics III will take place from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday, May 9, at the church, 1400 Main St.
“The event is designed to celebrate the ladies of our community and give them a special day out,” team leader Greg Gelzinnis said. “The event will feature a soup and salad luncheon, ladies-oriented vendors, a J.C. Penney style show, spa services and a special guest speaker.”
The team has been traveling to Honduras in alternating years since 2005 and has included team members as young as 7 and as old as 70. This year’s 18-member team includes 11 members from Alton and seven members from Corpus Christi, Texas. In recent years the team has been working on a new Mission Headquarters and worship space in Tegucigalpa, the capital city of Honduras.
“We are very excited that this year we will be providing fluoride treatments for the children who attend the Tegucigalpa central church,” veteran team member Kathy Lipe said. “We will also be doing treatments for the children in the tiny village of San Miguel in El Paraiso, Honduras, where our team first served in 2005.”
“Virginia Kerr, former co-host of ‘Great Day St. Louis’ and Channel 4 news anchor and current news reporter for JOY FM Radio, is going to be our guest speaker for this year,” Gelzinnis said. Her message, Everyone Has a Story, will chronicle tragedies and triumphs in her life as she has overcome eating disorders, two miscarriages and now has embarked on a home-based business and special programming highlighting good news stories.
New team members Bev Goans and her daughter Mary Brock once again will oversee the style show.
“Penney’s has been so wonderful to work with again this year and we will be featuring summer clothing for both men and women,” Goans said.
“We will also be showcasing fashions that high school students like myself want to wear,” Brock said.
“When Mary and I got to meet the mission superintendent from Honduras while he was in Alton last week, it brought tears to my eyes,” Goans said. “With the community’s support of this event, it is going to make it possible for us to really make a difference in the oral health of the children of Honduras ... we are so excited to be going with our team.”
A dozen specialty vendors will participate in this year’s event, including crowd favorites like Thirty-One, Silpada Jewelry, Origami Owl and Timmy the Turtle children’s books.
“We also have added a number of new vendors for Just For Chics III including Karibou Neck Pillows & Custom Aprons, Pure Heart Jewelry & Art, Custom Greeting Cards, Too Charming Tiles & Pendants, and even a revolutionary new cleaning system to help our ladies with cleanup around the home,” Gelzinnis said. “Fitness for the Soul will also be back providing chair massage and spa services for all of our special guests.”
Tickets are on sale for $25 at the church office. They are also available at the J.C. Penney Alton Square jewelry counter. Seating for the event is limited and advanced reservations are encouraged. Proceeds will assist with flouride treatments and the team’s continuing Honduras Mission efforts of the team.
