ALTON — Riverbend Faith In Action is an annual day of service on the first Sunday in October that has become known as World Communion Sunday for Christian denominations.
Members of Alton-Godfrey area churches will gather Oct. 4 at Alton High School and serve the community throughout the afternoon, then gather for dinner and celebration at Godfrey First United Methodist Church on Airport Road.
“This is our first year as a church to be involved and we’re really excited about the opportunity,” Lifehouse Church Pastor the Rev. Mike Adams said. “This really fits right into the DNA of our church. Community involvement is so important. We want our neighbors to know we care and we want to be involved in our area.”
Faith in Action is designed as a service project that spans every age range and skill level.
“The degree of projects that are on our list are impressive,” Adams said. “There are projects designed for families, individuals, indoor or outdoor, skilled and unskilled. A person can volunteer to make a meal and serve our local police officers or firefighters and then join them for the meal and fellowship.”
The goal for Faith in Action is to encourage others to make a connection with an agency or nonprofit that would appreciate more community involvement.
“These organizations or groups need help and support all year round,” Adams said. “We hope that people in the community will get a taste for volunteering and get involved on a more frequent basis. It doesn’t matter what age a person is or what skills they may have; there is something you can offer to another person in the community.”
Many high schools are requiring students to perform community service hours as a requirement for graduation. Students are invited to sign up online and contact the church pastor in charge of the project and they will sign off on community service hours. The event schedule includes: 10 a.m. marks the kick-off with communion service at the Alton High School auditorium at 4200 N. Humbert Road. Service projects begin at 11 a.m. with more than 20 projects scattered around the area. Volunteer crews will meet at Godfrey First United Methodist Church at 1100 Airport Road for a worship and celebration meal. Participants are asked to make reservations for the meal at www.SignUpGenius.com/go/20F044EA9AC29AAFA7-celebration.
It is not a requirement to be a church member to get involved or volunteer. Visit www.riverbendfia.org to see a list of projects or volunteer to be involved.
