Back in September 2004, five ladies chose to start a MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers) group at Vaughn Hill Church of Christ in East Alton. Their dream was to help moms get through the trying season of raising preschoolers together.
MOPS is for any mother who is pregnant or has a child from infancy thru Kindergarten. So, they got the word out and organized childcare workers for the kids for the moms to get a break and be encouraged.
The first year they had around 15 members. From there it just kept helping more mothers. In September 2010, the MOPS group moved to Bethalto United Methodist Church since the current leaders were graduating out of MOPS. This helped the group continue to flourish!
This year will be the 10th Anniversary of the groups establishment. We have had over 80 members throughout these years.
Some have only been there for a few months while they were on maternity leave from work. We have even had one mom there for all 10 years. We meet during the day. So, we see many moms go back to school or work to help their families. We have also had many members move away do to relocation of jobs. We never know how long a mom will be with us, but are always happy to be there for her when she needs us.
MOPS is a wonderful tool for moms to meet others in the same season of life. We help to encourage these ladies to be leaders in their family and the community. We do many different activities throughout the year: meetings, play dates, moms night outs, service projects, date night, etc.
At our meetings we do a variety of things from discussion on topics relevant to where we are in mothering, crafts to share or do with our families, have speakers teach us on topics that can help us be better moms, along with celebrating each other as we journey together.
