GODFREY – Lockhaven Golf Club (formerly Lockhaven Country Club) is commemorating over 50 years of operation in a way it would not have wanted — it has closed its doors.
Lockhaven Development board member Paul Lauschke called AdVantage News to report the closing on Monday, saying it was effective immediately. Members and customers were alerted Monday of the closing, as well.
An attempt last year to convert the once fully private country club into a semi-private facility (serving both the remaining membership and the general public) did not go as planned, as a continual drop in membership (down to 250 in 2012) along with competing area golf courses was too much for the club to weather.
“Thank you to everyone who supported Lockhaven Golf Club,” the club’s Facebook page said Monday. “This club has been a recreational, social and business staple in our community for many years and we find it very difficult to reach this conclusion. The negative effect this will have (on) our community will no doubt be felt by many.”
While the main dining area restaurant closed some time back, booked events reportedly will be honored through the end of November. The future of the property is “uncertain” at this point.
