Crowds fill the streets of downtown Alton at last year’s Chili Cook-Off.
ALTON — Alton Main Street invites the public to join the fun at the Downtown Alton Chili Cook-Off from noon until 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 17, in the warehouse and pavilion at Elijah P’s, 401 Piasa St.
The civic event encourages chefs, both amateur and professional, to match their favorite recipe with others in similar categories. Organizers say they look forward to greeting returning teams and welcoming new participants.
Judges will award $100 prizes to winners in four categories: Individual, Organization, Business and Restaurant. The team chosen as People’s Choice will receive the coveted silver ladle and plaque and bragging rights. In addition to awards for best chili, Alton Main Street will give a $100 prize for the best-decorated booth, so participants should come prepared to put their theme as well as their chili on display. Guests will enjoy live rock, folk, blues, and zydeco music from the Waters Trifecta.
There are 18 spaces available inside the warehouse for electric set-up (crock pot, roaster, etc.), and 14 spaces available in the outdoor pavilion for gas set-ups (propane stove or grill). Spaces are available on a first-come, first-serve basis; confirm participation by Oct. 5.
Tickets are on sale at the Alton Visitors Center, 200 Piasa St. in Alton, or by phone at (618) 465-6676. Tickets will be available at the door, but last year’s event sold out at 1:30, so guests should plan ahead.
Sponsorship opportunities are available, which include tickets to the event. Proceeds will support Alton Main Street’s ongoing efforts to improve and promote downtown Alton.
