EDWARDSVILLE — An Arkansas construction worker was struck and killed by a sport-utility vehicle Monday night in Granite City after he was thrown out of a bar and walked into oncoming traffic.
In a press release Tuesday, Madison County Coroner Stephen P. Nonn said Willie G. Shores, 44, of Fort Smith, was an itinerant worker who was employed on a project in the Edwardsville area. Shores was ejected on Monday night from Champions Sports Grill and Bar at Illinois 3 and West Chain of Rocks Road. He was witnessed leaving the property and then turning back to face the bar while stepping into the path of oncoming traffic. He was struck by a 2014 Ford Escape traveling south on Illinois 3. The incident was reported to authorities at 10:43 p.m.
Madison County Coroner’s Investigator Diondra Horner pronounced Shores dead at the scene at 10:57 p.m. Shores died as a result of head and chest trauma. Routine toxicology testing for the presence of alcohol and drugs will be performed at a later time. The incident continues to be investigated by the Madison County Coroner’s Office and the Granite City Police Department.
Funeral arrangements are pending.
