Wood River Masonic Lodge No. 1062 has announced the recipients of the 2015 Wood River Masonic Lodge Scholarship Fund and Scholastic Achievement awards.
The recipients are Emily Huppert of Roxana High School (planning to attend the University of Missouri Columbia and major in business marketing and minor in mass media), Ella Huppert of Roxana High School (planning to attend Lewis and Clark Community College, majoring in nursing), Marissa Thomas of Roxana High School (planning to attend Stetson University in Deland, Fla., majoring in marine biology and minor in psychology counseling), and Brandi Lacey of Wood River High School (attending Lewis and Clark Community College, studying dental hygiene).
Each scholarship has a value of $500 and is based on class rank, ACT scores, completeness of the application, list of personal recommendations, letters of recommendations, number of siblings per family and family household income. For the first time since the formation of the scholarship fund, three scholarships were given to Roxana students.
The lodge also presented Katie Kite with the Community Achievement Award for her outstanding service to the community as well as a donation check made payable to the Wood River Public Library.
Kite moved to Wood River in 2001 and has worked with the library since 2002, becoming director in 2013. She also was appointed the 2016 Chair of Illinois Library Association’s iREAD Committee and is a member of the Wood River Rotary Club and Wood River Heritage Council.
In an effort to fund and support these scholarships, the lodge holds two fundraising activities, the all you can eat pancake and sausage breakfast (held on every second Saturday of the month from September through April) and the all you can eat spaghetti dinner (held bi-annually on selected dates during October and April).
On May 27, the lodge held a Past Master Night, with scholarship recipients and their families in attendance.
