Jared Hanna, a father of two, has been missing for four years with no new leads.
On July 2, 2011, Jared was sitting on his couch when his sister left the house. At approximately 11:45 a.m., he was seen on the surveillance camera of a gas station in Jerseyville, buying a soda.
At 12:15 p.m., his cellphone confirms that he was in the East Alton area. The cellphone did not register again until about 9:30 p.m., when it pinged off a Centralia, Ill., tower as he called the mother of his two daughters.
He was driving on Jolliff Bridge Road, about three miles from Centralia, when he ran out of gas. Rumors have floated around that he had asked an older couple for a glass of water and directions to the nearest gas station late that evening, but they were never confirmed and brought about no further leads.
“He had his fishing gear with him and wanted to look at a car,” his sister, Heather Hanna, says. “He was supposed to pick up his kids that evening and never did. That’s when we knew he was missing because he would never miss spending time with his children.”
Information on the car deal is sketchy, and it is uncertain if he did visit with someone in the Centralia area regarding a vehicle.
After his vehicle was found abandoned on the side of the road on July 5, 2011, police searched the area but no results were forthcoming. In the late summer of 2011, a black duffle bag that belonged to Jared was found about five miles from the area in which his truck was parked, underneath a deer stand. Because it was wet and muddy, no prints were able to be lifted. Another search commenced, but nothing more was found.
“There have been no leads,” Heather said. “There have been no rumors or nothing. It’s like he dropped off the face of the earth.”
While there have been a few leads over the years, no new information has come in for the last year, and the case seems to have gone cold.
“Many people in that area have gone missing,” Heather said. “In April of 2011, someone went for a walk and never came back. A year after Jared went missing, someone was out collecting cans and never came back.”
The Clinton County Sheriff’s Department has multiple open missing person cases.
Jared Hanna would be 32 years old. He is 5’7” and weighed 195 pounds at the time of his disappearance. He has dark brown eyes and was last seen with black hair in a crew-cut style.
“We just want to get the story back out there to keep it fresh in people’s minds,” Heather said. “He was a much-loved brother, son and father, and we just want him back.”
