EDWARDSVILLE — The Madison County Coroner’s Office is assisting the Pontoon Beach Police Department with the investigation of the death of a teenager killed in an early morning accident Wednesday at his workplace at 12 East Gateway Commerce Center in Pontoon Beach.
In a press release, Madison County Coroner Stephen P. Nonn said police were called to the scene at 1:24 a.m. Zachery M. Boland, 19, of Stacy Drive in Mitchell, was pronounced dead at 2:08 a.m. at the warehouse facility, named Saddle Creek Corp., by Coroner’s Supervisory Investigator Deborah B. von Nida. Boland had been working at the facility less than a month.
Preliminary investigation reveals Boland was operating a forklift and loading appliances onto a truck. The truck driver thought the loading had been completed and started to pull away, causing the forklift to fall backward and Boland to strike his head on the loading dock’s door plate.
An autopsy will be performed later Wednesday as well as routine toxicology studies.
Funeral services are pending under the direction of Irwin Chapel in Granite City.
