LITCHFIELD — A two-vehicle crash on the Great River Road on Monday afternoon claimed the life of a 58-year-old Caseyville motorcyclist and seriously injured the motorcycle’s passenger.
According to an Illinois State Police District 18 release, the Jersey County coroner pronounced Keith Berry dead at the scene of the crash at 1:01 p.m. at the intersection of Lockhaven Road and Illinois 100.
Berry was driving a 2000 Ultra motorcycle north on Illinois 100 when a 2001 Ford truck driven by Michael Heitzig, 24, of Jerseyville, pulled in front of the motorcycle while trying to cross Lockhaven Road. The motorcycle struck the truck on the front passenger side. Berry and his passenger, Deborah Sereday, 55, of Caseyville, were ejected from the motorcycle. Sereday was airlifted to Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis in critical condition.
Heitzig was issued a citation for failure to yield at an intersection.
The northbound lanes of Illinois 100 were closed for approximately three hours while the preliminary crash investigation was completed. The crash remains under investigation by the Illinois State Police (Traffic Crash Reconstruction Unit. Additional agencies on scene included the Jersey County Sheriff’s Office, QEM Fire and Rescue and the Illinois Department of Transportation.
All subjects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
