EDWARDSVILLE — A Godfrey man died after having a heart attack and crashing into a tree on the Alton Farm and Home Supply Store parking lot Sunday afternoon, Madison County Coroner Stephen P. Nonn said in a press release Monday.
Nonn said Joseph Michael Welch Jr., 61, of the 5000 block of Clara, was driving a 2010 Ford Focus when the vehicle traveled east across the parking lot of the Farm and Home Supply Store, 2600 Homer Adams Parkway, and struck a tree. Alton police and fire personnel administered advanced life support to Welch at the scene and transferred him to Alton Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 3:55 p.m. Sunday, June 29. The incident was reported to emergency dispatchers at 3:12 p.m.
Welch received only superficial lacerations. X-rays failed to reveal any significant trauma. It was also determined through interviews that the decedent had a history of significant and major cardiac disease with a reported episode of dizziness on Saturday attributed to the heat. Nonn said Welch’s death is attributed to natural causes. Because Welch was operating a motor vehicle at the time of the incident, routine toxicology testing for the presence of alcohol and drugs will be performed.
Funeral arrangements are pending at this time but are under the direction of Wallace-Carroll Funeral Home of Herrick, Ill.
