BETHALTO — Members of the Southern Illinois Mustang Association will wrangle their four-wheeled horses for a car cruise and flea market to benefit their four-legged namesakes from the Legendary Mustang Sanctuary on Saturday, May 23, at St. Louis Regional Airport.
The event is open to everyone, with the flea market opening at 10 a.m. The Mustang cruise will run from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m.
The car cruise and flea market will have cars, trucks and motorcycles on display and more than a dozen vendors to help raise funds for the Legendary Mustang Sanctuary to purchase equipment and a new horse trailer.
“Members from the Southern Illinois Mustang Association talked with us and found that we were looking for ways to raise funding for a new trailer,” Mustang Sanctuary owner Kathy Lewis said. “They wanted to team up with us to help raise money to replace equipment. We came up with Mustangs for Mustangs. Our trailer is falling apart — you can see daylight through it. As it is, it’s unsafe to use, so we’re currently borrowing a trailer.”
The all-day event will include activities such as face-painting, Hotz and Bratz, a bounce house, 50/50 drawing, attendance prizes, a gun raffle and more.
“People will have the chance to not only get close to the Mustang cars, they will also have the opportunity to get close with the horses, too,” Lewis said. “People will be able to feed the horses carrots. We plan to have two of our horses at the car cruise.”
Vendor space is available for the flea market with a registration deadline of May 22. Registration fee for vendors is $10.
Ron Young’s Nashville Productions and Tri-City Speedway will present country music artist Moe Bandy with opening acts by local bands in a benefit concert at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 13, for the Legendary Mustang Sanctuary. Mustang horses will be in the concert corral for concert-goers to meet, weather permitting.
“We are really excited about the Moe Bandy concert at Tri-City Speedway,” Lewis said. “Ron Young Productions heard of us and wanted to do a benefit concert. The show is going to be great and all the proceeds from the event will come to the Mustang Sanctuary to cover the costs for the horses and the needs for the grounds and equipment such as sand, hay, shelters and panels and, of course, the trailer to transport them.”
Tickets for the concert are $20 for general admission and $40 for VIP passes and are available at ACE Printing on Airline Drive in East Alton, Andy’s Automotive in Alton and Wood River, Alton’s Atrium Hotel and Alton’s CVB; and Tri-City Speedway in Granite City. Tickets can be purchased online at www.eventjoy.com and www.legendarymustangsanctuary.org.
The Mustang Sanctuary is available for field trips, birthday parties and senior photos by calling (618) 616-8875. Proceeds go to care for the horses.
The goal of sanctuary owners Kathy and Shawn Lewis is to find horses adoptive homes. Government agencies round up wild mustangs across the country and bring them in to be cared for, tamed and adopted.
