Attendees who require an interpreter or other access accommodation needs can contact the Alton City Clerk’s Office at (618) 463-3522 no later than 48 hours prior to the commencement of the meeting to arrange accommodations.
The purpose of the new commission, which replaced the Human Relations Commission, is to promote equality and justice and to secure an end to discrimination, promote communication between government and the community, receive and research complaints involving discrimination, and initiate investigations into claims of discrimination.
The Human Relations Commission was utilized in the early 1990s, when gang crime was on the upswing, but was dormant for the last several years. The new commission is composed of 11 members, including the police chief, city attorney and director of economic development and housing. The remaining eight members are private citizens.
