Compass plant at Heartland Prairie at Gordon Moore Park in Alton.
ALTON — The next Heartland Prairie Walk is set for Tuesday, June 24, at Gordon Moore Park.
The bimonthly hikes begin at 5:30 p.m. and focus on identifying native plants and birds.
Organizers will discuss plants in the newer sections at the observation deck until about 6 p.m. so participants running late can still meet join the event in the front section of the prairie.
Participants should wear comfortable shoes and bring water, binoculars and a plant identification book. Drinks and snacks will be served after the walk.
At 5 p.m. on the nights of the walks, The Nature Institute will also offer a short, hands-on class explaining how to start and maintain a prairie. The class will focus on identifying native plants and eliminating invasives. Bring questions, protective gloves and clippers if possible.
