ALTON — As the first anniversary approaches of Alton’s first community co-op opening its doors, Grassroots Grocery is seeking candidates for a new general manager position.
Applications are being accepted through 5 p.m. Sunday, Aug 21, for employment at the store, which offers healthy, locally grown food and natural home products.
The general manager will be responsible for implementing the mission of Grassroots Grocery through store management and staff supervision. Duties will include directing the day-to-day operations of the business, purchasing inventory from multiple vendors, developing strategies to improve customer service, and driving store sales.
Qualified applicants will possess knowledge of fresh produce handling and general retail inventory management, superior customer service skills, and knowledge of general bookkeeping practices and point-of-sale systems, Microsoft Office and Google Drive. Two years of experience in food service or retail, including retail supervision and management, is required.
“Alton’s Hunterstown neighborhood is no longer considered a food desert due to the hard work and dedication of hundreds of volunteers who have poured their energy into the project thus far,” Advisory Council member Sara McGibany said. “We are looking forward to transitioning managerial responsibilities to a new General Manager who shares our passion for local food and community development.”
Besides meeting the demand for the products it carries, the larger goals of Grassroots Grocery are to strengthen the region’s network of local farmers, engage a diverse community in improving health and self-sufficiency, and contribute to a sustainable local economy. Interest in healthy food and non-toxic products is growing, and Grassroots Grocery is providing a network for people who value this culture.
“In our first year of operation, we’ve already seen many positive effects on our neighborhood and the community at large,” said Christine Favilla, who serves as the volunteer store manager and buyer for the co-op. “Grassroots Grocery is a catalyst that is strengthening Alton’s economy and fostering additional investment and job creation.”
