ALTON — Katrina Boyce of Alton Middle School and Kathryn Saenz of Eunice Smith Elementary were named as Students of the Month for January by the Alton Area Optimist Club.
The Alton Area Optimist Club gives a $25 gift card to the student as well as a $25 donation to a nonprofit organization of the student’s choice.
Katrina, the daughter of Hugh and Katie Boyce of Alton, chose Target for her gift card and St. Louis Children’s Hospital for her donation. She is in 6th grade at Alton Middle School (AMS) in the Illinois House. She is on high honor roll and her Young Author’s book has been chosen to go to the state competition. She is always willing to do whatever teachers or her fellow classmates need and cooperates with a smile. She respects authority and has gained the respect of her classmates by always making sure she does her part in all projects. She is known to encourage other students and staff, who know they can depend on Katrina at all times. Katrina and her grandmother participate in a program called Giving Dolls; they make dolls to donate to underprivileged and sick children, and those who have lost their homes. She is also involved with her church. Teachers and staff say that Katrina is a delight to have as a student.
Kathryn Saenz, the daughter of Kristen and Brian Saenz of Alton, is a fifth-grader at Eunice Smith Elementary School. She chose Target for her gift card and St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital as her donation. She has maintained high honor roll for the first semester of school. She never fails to set high standards of achievement in all subject areas. She is viewed as a leader among her peers. She participates in the Read/Right/Run program, is a Student Council Representative and participates on the PEPP Squad (Peers Educating Peers Positively).
